U.S. Department of Defense
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) wanted to provide critical information assurance functions for its logical (computer) and physical assets, improve business processes and enhance quality of life for its 4 million employees worldwide via chip-based smart cards. The EDS team first integrated one of the world's largest databases. EDS then upgraded the DoD's existing card-issuance system so that it could produce smart cards and linked it to a smart card and digital identity issuance system. The card consolidates a person's multiple credentials on a single card and lets users access restricted buildings and networks and encrypt and decrypt e-mail. Thanks to improved business process made possible by the card, the Army's 25th Infantry Division estimates that saves 30,000 man-hours per year.
