Titanic Live!
EDS Brings The “Titanic Live!” From Sea To Students Via Satellite
For more than 15 years, EDS has helped renowned underwater explorer Dr. Robert Ballard fulfill his mission of engaging researchers, the general public and students in scientific exploration through the use of advanced technology. EDS partnered with Dr. Ballard again to elevate the definition of museum to a new dimension – from the middle of the Atlantic Ocean to designated Internet broadcast sites nationwide.
When Dr. Ballard returned to the R.M.S Titanic in June 2004, nearly 20 years after he first discovered the sunken luxury liner, he and the Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration’s (MAIFE) Immersion Project wanted to take students, educators and scientists nationwide along on the expedition. EDS proposed a best-in-class satellite communication solution, enabling him to do just that online as it occurred. Never before had a voyage garnered so much media coverage with several major networks approaching Dr. Ballard for live interviews while at sea. Coordinating these productions successfully required that telephones, Internet and e-mail, as well as file and data sharing, all function around the clock and in conjunction with one another. However, the greatest challenge of all: ensuring seamless, flawless delivery of the voyage on live TV and the Internet. Broadcasting live meant a vast audience could see even the smallest error. Since technician service calls are hardly possible from the middle of the ocean, the solution had to work effectively the first time.
