In 1995, EDS pioneered immersive visualization with the first commercial Virtual Reality Center in the world and it's still one of the few such facilities available in the marketplace. By testing designs in a virtual world first, EDS is helping clients make better decisions and improve the quality and time to market for new products, services and processes. Clients are saving on prototypes and avoiding mistakes they wouldn't have found until much later in the process, saving precious time and money.
Virtual Reality is firmly implanted into the Product Lifecycle Management offering, providing unique insight and cost savings for multiple industries. EDS’ expertise includes a broad range of experience enabling the proper selection of visualization tools and techniques.
Virtual environments can be experienced in many ways such as the “PowerWall,” or immersive work rooms (CAVETM) that surround a user with projections in front, on both sides and on the floor. EDS also offers head mounted displays, smaller, more portable stereo displays and even Web- and document-based 3D models for portable use.
EDS' Virtual Reality Brings Cross-Functional Teams Together
Portable visualization solutions enable clients to take the virtual reality (VR) capabilities with them to bring together designers, engineers, sales and service, and marketing and executive management for product design reviews. Virtual marketing clinics are conducted to get early customer feedback, long before the product is committed to manufacturing. 3D models are leveraged downstream for advertising and Web configurators during the sales process. The same 3D data also supports maintenance and trains technicians before new products are available as the 3D data can now be embedded into documentation.
Students Are Trained In Simulated Manufacturing Environments
An EDS client is using VR to train students on the same kinds of computer visualization equipment that is utilized by creative designers and engineers at commercial businesses. The facilities can also used to safely train students in simulated manufacturing environments. And, it has the added benefit of training VR specialists who will be the support personnel for these kinds of facilities as they continue to grow around the world.
In addition to portable VR applications, EDS' clients can also rent the EDS Virtual Reality Center in Troy, Michigan, to leverage our technology investments and experienced engineers. This technology is currently being used by clients around the world for automotive styling design, aerospace simulation, consumer goods and retail planning, energy exploration, urban planning and construction, as well as for medical and chemical research.
