French Fire Department Named Computerworld Honors Program Laureate

15 Jul 2008

Each year, the Computerworld Honors Program brings together the principals of the world's foremost information technology companies to recognize and document the achievements of the men, women, organizations and institutions around the world, whose visionary applications of information technology promote positive social, economic and educational change.

Nominees become Program Laureates and a case study on its project becomes part of the Honors Program’s Global Archives. France’s Service d’Incendie et de Secours de l’Ain (SDIS 01), the fire department in the administrative region of Ain, was named a Program Laureate for its case study on its emergency management response project using ARTEMIS©.

Every day SDIS 01 saves lives by promptly responding to emergencies and disasters. Ain is an administrative region in France providing services to 550,000 citizens and responsible for 2,225 square miles. SDIS 01’s 5,786 employees answer 150,000 calls and responds to 31,000 emergencies per year. SDIS 01 is responsible for responding to any emergency in which people or property are in danger.

SDIS 01 worked with EDS to deploy ARTEMIS©, EDS’ state-of-the-art operational emergency management system that enables coordinated intervention efforts among multiple operations centers. ARTEMIS© places critical emergency and response information at the fingertips of dispatchers and first responders. Information like where and what emergency was occurring, who was hurt, which were the best resources available to respond to this emergency, the quickest route for responding, emergency response and notification plans for high risk facilities and locations, and to monitor and track all communications and actions throughout the response.
