Rolls-Royce is distinct from other companies in that it shares the same standards that are applied to the development of its products with its IT. As a world leader in civil and defence aerospace, with an annual turnover of more than £7 billion. The emphasis on engineering excellence is evident throughout the company, from the precision-engineered engines it makes, to the way it manages its projects and business processes.
Beginning with the integration of SAP between the civil aerospace and energy divisions of the company, Rolls-Royce has concentrated on a massive enterprise-wide SAP implementation program for the past two years. This implementation has involved moving all of the companies processes and operations into a single standard. MRP, HR and financials all use the shared services model, and with EDS' help, the global convergence programme has easily met its original completion deadline of the third quarter of this year.
The implementation was done unit-by-unit, and in all, some 21 sites currently use the common template with more sites to be added in the coming year.
As Rolls-Royce's primary outsourcing partner, EDS helped the company with the SAP implementation. EDS has approximately 1,000 staff working on location at Rolls-Royce sites. During the peak of the SAP implementation, 120 EDS people were working alongside 300 from Rolls-Royce.
