Business Exchange Services: Technical Summary

Seamless Flow of Information

You and your trading partners have a good thing going. But you each do business in your own way. Documents, forms, invoices, tracking data – all need to be generated and shared, but sometimes the formats don't match or your systems aren't compatible.

This managed service is a flexible, scalable and extensive service offering containing a full complement of electronic data interchange (EDI) processing, document delivery and communication capabilities. The managed service can be broken up into five key components:

  • Communications – The communication module establishes the correct connection between trading partners via the EDS*ELIT infrastructure communication services, or via dedicated point-to-point connections and is responsible for tracking and routing data to its intended destination. The Managed Service can handle a variety of communication protocols on various platforms, including secure FTP, AS2 and HTTPS. This module facilitates the movement of data between the translation engine, the trading partners and the various file and document presentment services within the Managed Service framework (e.g., WebBBS, Web-EDI, e*Fax and e*Mail).
  • Translation – At the heart of the Managed Service application is the translation engine. Currently, EDS supports a number of commercial translators as part of its translation solution within the Managed Service environment, including Sterling Commerce Gentran Integration Suite, Sterling Commerce Gentran (UNIX), Seebeyond E*Gate, Webmethods, Sybase (Paperfree) and General Electric – Application Integrator™ (UNIX, NT). The Managed Service architecture is flexible, scalable and allows for rapid document turnaround. It supports ASC X12, UN/EDIFACT, XML, RossettaNet, xCBL, EIAJ, NCPDP, Flat File (positional and delimited) and other industry standards. It can quickly integrate, manage and automate dynamic business processes by exchanging business documents among applications, within or across organizational boundaries. The translation engine has the capability to code specific and unique business rules and to ensure that these rules are applied when certain conditions are satisfied.
  • Process Management – The process manager application is a key component of the Managed Service environment. These applications are responsible for message and error tracking, partner management, billing and reporting. Information captured by these processes is populated into a central database. BES support teams utilize this information to resolve errors, monitor and mange the environment, conduct performance tuning and generate appropriate customer and billing reports.
  • Development – Managed Service's robust drag and drop development environment allows for rapid application and mapping development. It combines ease of use and simplicity with the sophistication required to define complex and unique business rules. Managed Service helps to build processes that span not only applications, but also businesses, over the Internet. Graphical tools make it easy for business analysts and application developers to model and implement solutions.
  • Support Services – Trading partner and application helpdesk support are included as part of the Managed Service offering. Helpdesk agents perform call tracking, problem identification, and problem resolution and escalation procedures, as required. The EDI helpdesk will handle queries from clients and their trading partners relating to the status of messages transmitted via the service and will act as a Single Point of Contact (SPOC) for resolving any problems encountered with the service.

The BES Managed Service is extensible, so that additional value-added services can be transparently integrated as value-added services on behalf of one or more clients. Example value-add services are e-Invoicing, Chargeback and Deduction Management, HIPAA Validation, Business Activity Monitoring (at the business process level), and Trading Partner scorecarding.
