Re-engineered Internet

by Charlie Bess

The New York Times had an article about the National Science Foundation's Global Environment for Networking Investigations project that is intended to fundamentally re-engineer the Internet and overcome its shortcomings.

Edge-based or pervasive computing that everyone is expecting in the future will require this kind of fundamental reassessment. The Internet originally had a level of trust (or was it naivety) that clearly needs to be reassessed. It was also meant for large boxes talking to large boxes, and that has shifted as well. Much of what we have been talking about in our next big thing’s blog assumes this type of reassessment and analysis will be performed. An analysis like the NSF has underway appears to be something where a services company like EDS could bring a different perspective.

There are other efforts underway like: Internet2, the National LambdaRail and PlanetLab as well.

I find it ironic that the NSF called the project Geni. Maybe they had a look at the Sun's Jini specification that has been available since 1999.
