Would You Rather Be Watched By Computers Or People?

by Charlie Bess

I saw this blog entry on the future pundit blog that made me think about the pattern recognition implications outside of business. Now that we know the NSA is using pattern recognition techniques to find interesting information and focus the human resources on them, it makes me believe there are whole other levels of application within business that I have barely thought of.

I tend to agree with the author that privacy as we currently understand it is something that we may have actually lost long ago. My local grocery store knows more about my behavior (through their frequent shopper program) than my healthcare provider.

Somehow, I feel more comfortable with the thought that their systems understand my behavior, than if I thought the person in the checkout line was keeping track of my every move.

But now that I think of it, I grew up in a small town where everyone used to watch my behavior, and my parents always found out. Are you paranoid if they are actually out to get you?

The examples I've talked about before for identifying and driving business value through the use of pattern recognition are not even the tip of the iceberg compared to what a determined and innovative team can come up with.
