Bluetooth, GSM and being on the road

by Charlie Bess

I thought I’d try a little experiment this week. I am going to be in a variety of places in the UK, and I’ll try and use my PocketPC and its Bluetooth capabilities to meet all my Internet access needs (like this entry to the blog).

I can’t believe the hotel I just checked into wants to charge £20 for 24 hours of access. Of course, I’ve not gotten the data bill for my little experiment either.

I seem to be able to cover 80-90% of my Internet access needs with just the PocketPC, without needing to get on my laptop. I always have a fear that SMS will try to push down some huge emergency patch over my “wet string” level bandwidth when I connect the laptop up to the corporate LAN. I know I am always going to get a signature file push.

Oh well, the things we need to put up with in today’s wild west Internet world.

I understand your pain. The range of internet pricing in hotels in London is between £5(Rydges) - £45(Marriot) per hour. This can be dial up access as well. Hopefully you can stop by www.rexlounge.co.uk the next time your in London.

Cheers.

That's a coincidence, I stayed a stones throw away from your Russell Square location for three weeks last year.

Having suffered through the same issue ($25 for internet at each airport lounge you pass through each day) I've found an interesting solution that's working for me..

I've got hold of Nokia's new 770 internet tablet and a modern nokia bluetooth phone (8801) and the two are working beautifully together.. I can VNC to my home servers using SSH, I can read my RSS feeds and browse with a real browser (opra) on an 800x480 screen

In all honestly I haven't dragged my laptop out of its bag in over one month while flying..

As a side benefit, I've found that having Wikipedia available while in a meeting can be invaluable..

Brian.

Brian - I know what you mean about wikipedia in a meeting. Last week I was giving a presentation and the person looking up a topic tried to correct/out maneuver me, but he was looking at an entry I had created.
