Obstacles to innovation

by Charlie Bess

The Doblin has group published a list of eight obstacles to innovation. In a blog entry, Dave Pollard wrote about the eight ways your innovation program can go wrong. These made me think about what prevents me from being more innovative.

I don't have a problem with innovation, but with "shiny ball" syndrome. It prevents me from making it all the way from idea to useful (invention -> innovation). I guess that's what happens when you are interested in a large number of areas and people keep calling you up and pointing you at more interesting problems.

It can be too easy, once you see how the idea will work out, to back away and leave execution to others (who may or may not have the same level of passion and understanding).

To see shiny ball syndrome in action, throw a ball into a box of kittens. I wonder does that mean if the problem is interesting enough your hrair goes to one?
