Google Never Stops Creating - Betas

by Randy Mears

I think that it is fitting that the Internet’s king of search seems to be on a continuous quest for new ways to enable us to put the Web to work. Remember when Google was just a search engine? In stark contrast to Google’s “salad days,” today Google is an Internet giant with a growing stable of Web-based services that are available to all of us, free of charge.

Because Google doesn’t depend on fanfare to introduce its new services to the Internet community, we sometimes barely notice when a new service appears. I clearly remember finding out about Google Maps from a friend. Not only was it a tour de force in Web-based maps, it also served as a ground breaking proof of concept for Ajax; one that all the world could see. So it is with Google; their new services seem to appear and gain momentum purely by word-of-mouth. Here is a short list of some free Google Services that most of us have heard of:

Each of them are worth a second look, but there are many more. One service that I recently heard about from one of my associates is Google Docs and Spreadsheets. I really like the collaborative capabilities, but I worry a little about the "Beta" designation, which seems to be understated in grey at the lower right of its "Google" title graphic.

That leads me to one of the questions that continues to nag me about Google. I love what they do and all, but I really wish I understood what they meant by "Beta." This is the best discussion that I have found on the topic so far.

Perhaps the reason why most of Google's products are not adapted that quickly is because most of the users on the internet are not classified as advanced. Some of Google's products require a little more knowledge and perhaps it scares people away.

Besides search and Gmail, I make full use of Google's SMS technology (http://sms.google.com/). You can send a text message and they will return search results. For example, if I was driving around town and decided to go have dinner at a specific restaurant and make reservations, I'd be stuck calling 411 finding out what the phone number is. Instead, I can text google with the name of the restaurant and they will reply back with all locations and phone numbers. Done and done.

If you're in marketing, Google also makes it easier for you to do your own Search Engine Optimization. They have free tools you can use to optimize your site and add it to Google's search index, thus better results.

On topic of things Google does but most people dont know is measurement conversion. try typing in 1 foot in light years, or 1 GBP in USD into the search bar. it will convert weights, linear and area measurements, volumes and liquid measurements from one system to another. Its a totally under-rated, but extremely useful feature and isnt even publicized by Google as far as i can see. Go on, try it.

Yes, most of google products are betas, and most of their services need expert level of knowledge, I agree with comments posted by ed5adm1n.

Yes one of the best google betas i like the most is the "CALL" Feature, you can search for a contact say a grocery shop like shaws and click on call button, and enter your cell phone# then they will call shaws and call you and connect both.

Please read how to use this feature in google maps too,

Yeah , thats true, google keeps on coming up with new ideas. One of the thing which i have come across is Adsense by google, it uses a simple concept of providing source codes, which you could use in your website to get the google search bar, and as it is used you are paid for it. Its Really COOL !
