Emerging Technologies For 2007

by Randy Mears

After reading MIT Technology Review’s “10 Emerging Technologies 2007” special report, I marveled at just how diverse, yet related, some of these 10 technologies are. In particular, health science and information technology seem to have more than their share of attention and are often inter-related. Given the high value and universal importance of the health science, it should come as no surprise that four out of the 10 technologies are focused there.

While looking at last year’s list from the same source, I noticed that six of the 10 were in health science. While both lists are very forward looking, they do not leave me with much confidence that adoption is assured or will come anytime soon for most of the items. While an R&D advancement can make a technology seem imminent, commercialization typically takes longer than expected.

Still, such lists do have value if for no other reason than to keep us informed and interested.

I was especially interested in the light-focusing antennas which could give us another 3 orders of magnitude optical storage densities in a few years--3.5 terabytes on a DVD.
