Corporate Email And Apple's iPhone

by Randy Mears

With the launch of Apple's iPhone imminent, many users of corporate mobile email systems (like RIMM’s BlackBerry) are beginning to ask the question, "Will my corporate email work on an iPhone?" I have always assumed that such a combination wouldn't work but I don't actually know the facts just yet. It is a very good question that is explored with greater depth in this WSJ article (Subscription required).

Unfortunately, and as I suspected, it doesn't look good for the iPhone. Hang in there though; time has a way of fixing these kinds of things.

Currently iPhone does not support corporate emails but it supports browser based e-mails. But at the time of launch it was announced that iPhone will support the POP3 and IMAP services. But I believe IMAP does not support automatic email synchronization. However a spokesperson of Apple confirmed that the email synchronization is not in the feature list

I'll just use EDS's OWA for the time being, who cares about the auto-push. And if IMAP isn't turned on in the Exchange servers, I'll bet through pressure and time it will be.

I use the OWA on my iPhone. However, rumor has it that Apple is working on getting the licensing so that they can have Exchange server connnectivity http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=534

Apple announced last week, the support of Exchange Server for iPhone will be available in June 2008

Apple just announced yesterday that the iPhone software update 2.0 that supports Exchange is coming soon possibly even before July 11 for the existing iPhones and on July 11, 2008 Exchange support will be released along with the new iPhone 3G release.

I installed the 2.0 firmware update on my ipod touch and Exchange support is there. However I am unable to get it configured. I was able to configure my VPN connection to get to the Plano network but I cannot connect to usplm211.amer.corp.eds.com which is my exchange server.

Any suggestions?

EDS allows iPhone access into Exchange although it isn't officially supported. You have to solve your own technical issues but I've never had any. Mine is working great. Here's what you do:

1. Go into Gemini and subscribe to the COE Mobile Workplace Services (MWS).

2. On the iPhone, go into mail settings, select Microsoft Exchange and fill in the information. Server is uspl.webmail.eds.com, username is domain\netid and password is your regular password.

I'm in the GAL if anyone has any questions.
