Does the Long Tail Exist?

I read an interesting article recently by Andrew Orlowski called "Chopping the Long Tail" which questions the existence of the Long Tail effect, first described by Chris Anderson. Basically the article summarises the work of economist Will Page with Mblox founder Andrew Bud and Page's colleague Gary Eggleton. They examined the sales of digital music from a large digital music provider and concluded that far from their being a Long Tail, almost all of the sales are from a very small sub set of the total music catalogue.

Open Source versus Open Standards

I happened to be browsing an email yesterday on the topic of Open Source, in which the author was clearly passionate about the benefits and virtues of Open Source. As I read it, I sensed a similarity with the quest we saw a few years ago with regard to ‘all out' software re-use. It was the concept of loosely coupled services working within an architecture framework (SOA) that became the enlightenment that was needed to put that quest into perspective. So, are standards to be the enlightenment that will bring a similar perspective to the Open Source debate?

Interface shifts at the edge

Late last year, I mentioned that User Interfaces will undergo significant developments in 2008. Handheld or mobile devices are likely to benefit from these efforts the most. Computer magazine had an article (sorry, subscription required) on this topic, where they described it as "A successful UI, like a well-designed doorknob, is one that no one notices".

Re-rounding rebounding?

I was privileged to attend and speak at the Global Business Forum in Banff, Canada last week. It was the 9th iteration of a very well run gathering of business and governmental leaders with an impressive slate of speakers and roster of participants. While much of the discussion was on the recent financial events, top topics also included energy, security and the upcoming U.S. Presidential elections.

Can Innovation Games help organizations create innovative products and services?

I recently read the book Innovation Games: Creating Breakthrough Products Through Collaborative Play, 2007, Luke Hohmann. In his book, Luke describes a series of twelve interactive techniques which help organizations create the products and services customers buy. The games you play are related to your goals and objectives.

How will we use all this processing (the age of abundance in computing)??

A while back I wrote a blog entry about the age of abundance in computing. Recently, I exchanged some email with Ken Orr (of Cutter) about the issues related to maximizing value delivered from multi-core solutions using parallel processing techniques. He expressed an "assembly line" view where specialized services work together to provide value to an enterprise; much like Henry Ford introduced the use of specialized workers into the assembly line production of automobiles. Each service does "what it is best at" in parallel.

Opportunistic Computing in the Cloud

I've been thinking more about the entry the other day on heeding Moore's law.

I've had a few conversations with folks in other organizations about cloud computing. I am always fascinated by their almost blind focus on cost reduction. I see real opportunity for the shift in the value side. Value is what makes IT relevant. An exclusively cost focus is why IT doesn't matter.

What’s time for anyway??

I remember hearing the story once of a mother who was taking her daughter to the zoo. They were rushing from place to place and the little girl was frustrated by the harried pace and her inability to enjoy the experience. She asked her mom "Why can't we look at everything?" The mother stated "We don't have time for that." The girl's response was "What's time for anyway???"

An example of simulation and process modeling

There have been a number of entries in this blog on the use of simulation and modeling and the effect on IT of the future. I've seen a number of modeling tools, but this week, (as part of EDS' Top Gun Program with Oracle), I was able to see some of the more recent work on the BPA Suite.

Reviewing The IT Value Stack

I was reviewing The IT Value Stack the other day and in the process exchanged a few emails with Ade McCormack the author.

Although he does a great job describing the issues of value generation within IT the way it is structured today. There were some differences of perspective that I have to bring out:
